The Retreat to open new unit in Strensall, York

We are pleased to announce The Retreat York will be opening a new unit on 5th October 2011.  The Retreat Strensall is a community based hospital promoting social inclusion and independence.

Older adults with severe and enduring mental health problems will be admitted to this unit if they require hospital care but in a less formal environment and would benefit from a community setting.

Based in the village of Strensall, on the outskirts of York, people can access local community facilities and benefit from a real sense of social inclusion.

The mixed gender unit consists of 15 bedrooms within the main building, and two bungalows located immediately next to it.  One has two bedrooms, the other three.  The bungalows accommodate people who are recovering to a level where they can live more independently, whilst still accessing support.

People admitted to The Retreat Strensall are predominantly on the Recovery and Rehabilitation Pathway but some people may be on the Long-term Care Pathway.

Admission criteria:

  • Age over 50 years.
  • Not requiring single gender therapeutic environment.
  • Confirmed ICD 10 diagnosis with need for rehabilitation and multi-professional treatment.
  • Aim is for discharge to community placement including residential or nursing home.
  • Rehabilitation is expected to take a minimum of six months.
  • Men and women either informal or detained under the Mental Health Act.
