The Retreat as part of its commitment to make York a dementia friendly city has started offering Dementia Friend sessions.
The sessions which take about an hour to complete are being delivered by Clinical Psychologist Stephanie Petty and Assistant Psychologist Michelle Potts. The sessions give attendees a good understanding of what dementia is and how they as dementia friends can help in practical ways to make every day life easier for people living with dementia.
A recent session delivered to the local NHS community rehab team proved extremely popular and created 10 new Dementia Friends. Some feedback from the session was:
'It made me realise that all people who experience dementia are individuals who experience a different path of the disease. It also gave me some ideas about how to alter my interactions with patients, particularly leaving people with more positive emotional memory from our interaction.'
'Enjoyed the talk very informative. The exercise regarding how we perceive what a patient with dementia can/cannot do was very enlightening.'
