Respect My Wishes is an advanced statement
An advance statement is a request someone can make about what they would like to happen in the future if they lose the ability to make a decision for themselves. Some people choose to keep a record of how they would like to be treated, or not be treated, if they are ever in this position.
It is important to talk about the things that make you the person you are in your statement and to talk about your preferences for care in lots of different situations.
There is a legal difference between statements that refuse treatment and statements that make requests.
Only an advance decision to refuse treatment can be legally binding, but other statements should normally be followed by your clinical team.
