Recovery and Rehabilitation

Hannah Mills unit provides assessment and psychiatric rehabilitation for people with complex mental health problems, including psychosis, self harm, substance misuse including alcohol abuse, dual diagnosis and mood disorders (eg anxiety, depression, bipolar affective disorder and complex PTSD).

We help people whose ability to maintain independence in the community is compromised by distress resulting from their life experience.

Service Description

The service uses evidence-based Psychosocial Interventions (PSI) as its core model to work towards recovery from mental health problems.  Patients have an individual programme that includes working in groups that are relevant to them as well as individual work with psychology, psychiatry, clinical nurse specialist, occupational therapist, nurses and social worker trained in the PSI approach.

Other therapeutic approaches are used on the unit including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness both of which have a strong evidence base for working with people with difficult to manage behaviour/complex needs.  The multidisciplinary team also includes individuals trained in a variety of other therapeutic disciplines, including Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Visual Imagery/Hypnotherapy, Psychodynamic approaches as well as engaging patients in practical recovery focussed work in education, voluntary work and developing life skills.

A range of accommodation is provided offering the individual an opportunity to recover in an open supportive environment which matches their needs.  Accommodation includes 11 ensuite bedrooms, a bedsit and two independent living flats (staff supported).

Treatment Philosophy

Key features of the programme include:

  • A therapeutic environment focused on the recovery and wellbeing model promoting a sense of hope and optimism.
  • Initial treatment aims to focus on the reduction of disturbed behaviour and distress, risk to self and others, moving through to the development of appropriate coping skills and self-management.
  • Individual and group therapy based on Cognitive Behavioural and Mindfulness.
