New unit opens - The Cottage

The Retreat York has opened a new unit for older adults with severe and enduring mental health problems.

The Cottage, in the grounds of The Retreat, is for men of midlife and beyond who need hospital based rehabilitation to develop emotional and practical skills for independent or supported living.

The Cottage forms part of the Recovery and Rehabilitation Pathway for the Specialist Older Adult Service with the emphasis on enablement and person-led, person-centred care plans.  With a strong emphasis on social inclusion, the therapeutic programme will include high levels of Occupational Therapy, access to volunteering opportunities and facilities in the local community.

The original cottage, with two bedrooms, has been upgraded and extended to create a unit with seven single ensuite bedrooms, a large lounge/dining room, sun lounge, kitchen and laundry room.  Therapy and groups rooms are provided in an adjacent building to provide therapy space away from the living area.

Admission criteria:

  • Men with severe or enduring mental health needs.
  • Older Adults whose mental and physical health deteriorates without high levels of support.
  • People who have spent significant periods in hospital and require a pathway back into the community.
  • Older Adults with histories of detention under the Mental Health Act who require a new approach (including those with forensic histories).
