Mental healthcare for people : not for profit
For those people who find alcohol is the answer during the festive season, a new alcohol detox service is now open in York. The
alcohol detoxification programme and accompanying therapy programme is
being provided by The Retreat – a specialist mental health provider in
York – within a newly-refurbished unit. People who have become dependent on alcohol can refer themselves to The Retreat or be referred through their local doctor. The
10-day intensive detox programme can also be followed by a 28-day
therapy programme which explores all aspects of people’s drinking
behaviour and helps them develop new skills and strategies to manage
stress in the future. The Retreat’s clinical service
manager Maggie Scott said: “Alcohol is often the answer for many people
when dealing with stressful issues and is particularly prevalent during
and following the festive season which is a very difficult time for many
people. “Drinking too much can lead to a physical
and mental dependence on alcohol and the only effective remedy is to
stop completely. Without it, however, people can suffer severe
withdrawal symptoms, so we provide medically assisted detoxification,
followed by support which helps with this process.” The
detox programme begins with a thorough assessment to determine the
appropriate level of care required for the individual. Staff at The
Retreat will also look at nutrition and hydration issues and provide the
appropriate medication to safely detoxify each person.
