Careers at The Retreat

Working at The Retreat

Staff are our greatest asset and without their dedication we would not be able to deliver the quality of care to the people who use our services.  We are committed to providing a competitive remuneration package and regularly undertake a benchmarking exercise to ensure we remain competitive.  We also conduct annual staff surveys to gain feedback from staff on all areas of employment.  This helps us in identifying and improving any areas that fall short of staff expectations.

Equal Opportunities

The Retreat is an Equality employer. Our aim is to be fair to everybody and to ensure that no job applicant or employee receives more or less favourable opportunities or treatment on the grounds of, for example: age, race, colour, ethnic or national origin, nationality (subject to nationality rules), sex / gender, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, religion or religious affiliation / belief, part-time working, trade union membership and duties.

Criminal Records Bureau

All appointments are subject to the receipt of a satisfactory Disclosure at the appropriate level from the Criminal Records Bureau(CRB).

Pension

The Retreat operates a Contributory Defined Benefit Pension Scheme (CARE) linked to salary, membership of which is voluntary and eligibility is from first day of employment.

Life Assurance Scheme

As part of The Retreat’s Pension Scheme, life assurance cover is provided free.  This provides a cash sum of three times the annual salary in the event of death in service.

Discretionary bonus

As a not-for-profit charity we are able to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all staff by offering a discretionary bonus if the organisation achieves its targets.  This is an opportunity to share in the organisation’s success.

Holiday entitlement

Full time staff receive 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays*.

Long service

In recognition of long service (10, 15, 20 and for each five years beyond 20) a cash payment will be made, at present £250 FTE at each interval.

Employee Assistance Scheme

The welfare and wellbeing of our staff is one of our top priorities and we provide a free, confidential service for all staff to help with stress and personal relationship issues.

Staff Discounts

We provide significant discounts with leading retailers through our Retreat Rewards Employee Benefits programme.

A staff canteen is open during office hours providing free beverages and a ‘healthy eating’ lunch at subsidised prices.  Refreshments and vending machines are available 24/7.

Recruit a Friend Scheme

Employees who recruit a friend to The Retreat are entitled to a bonus payment which is payable after six months if both persons are on the payroll. Currently £200-£600 depending on position filled.

Professional Registration Fees

The Retreat will pay all professional registration fees relevant to the post.

Free Car Parking

There is free car parking on site, although staff are encouraged to use public transport (bus stop at front of premises) or to cycle to work. A secure cycle shed is provided.

Learning Resource Centre

The Retreat has a state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centre.  The centre is equipped with computer and presentation equipment, and is open to all staff and to Royal College of Nursing (RCN) members as a reference facility, as well as students on placement from the university.

A host of mental health publications, research papers and learning equipment is available within the centre.  Staff can also use the computers, borrow books and get help accessing information.

Exercise opportunities at The Retreat

The Retreat has a fully equipped gym near the Main Hall, which is under the responsibility of the physiotherapy department.  As well as the gym, there are tennis courts in the grounds, and a variety of sporting equipment, including badminton nets which can be set up in the Main Hall.

The Retreat has its own cricket pitch and the cricket team play matches twice a week between April and September. All staff are welcome to participate.

An all-weather path follows the boundary of The Retreat’s grounds which allows staff (and patients) to get some fresh air and stretch their legs admiring the beautiful 40 acres of grounds.  A vital part of the therapeutic environment enjoyed today and set up by William Tuke over 200 years ago.
